Modular SFC is a start-up instrument design and development company founded in 2007 by entrepreneur, Herbert Hedberg. The company’s first products are designed to improve the mechanism of Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) fraction collection and enable chemists to more readily realize the inherent benefits of SFC. The company applied for its first SFC fraction collection technology patents in January 2007 and will begin shipment of its CFC series of benchtop fraction collectors at the beginning of 2008.

Mission

Incorporating its patent pending SFC fraction collection technology, Modular SFC’s products will extend the application of SFC and enable chemists to apply the speed, selectivity, cost, and environmental friendly benefits offered by SFC to a larger number of separation chemists. The unique HPLC-like convenience of Modular’s CFC Fraction Collectors overcome many of the past barriers to widespread adoption of SFC and will extend its scaleable application to traditional HPLC applications in pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, cosmetics, polymers, and other areas.

Executive Profile

Company founder and president, Bert Hedberg, has been involved in scientific instrument design, engineering, and manufacturing for over 30 years. He has led design and engineering efforts on a number of new products at leading instrument manufacturers including Waters Corporation, Autochrom, Accutek, and Cetek Corporation. Most recently, he developed and patented a high throughput Capillary Electrophoresis screening platform for drug discovery at Cetek.

Early in his career, he was a design team member of the Waters M6000 Solvent Delivery System and the PrepLC 500 Preparative Chromatography System. At Autochrom he designed a popular product line of HPLC automation accessories.

Bert received his BSEE in 1973 from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and earned his MBA in Finance and New Ventures in 1980 at Northeastern University.
